It has been known for half a century that neurotransmitters are released in preformed quanta, that the quanta represent transmitter-storing vesicles, and that release occurs by exocytosis. The focus of this book is twofold. In the first part, the molecular events of exocytosis are analysed. In the second part of the book, the presynaptic receptors for endogenous chemical signals are presented that make neurotransmitter release a highly regulated process.

This book reviews the main topics in thromboprophylaxis around orthopedic surgery, from a general scope of the problems with the disease highlighting them in orthopedics to the new specific protocols involving, for example, new oral anticoagulants. The prevalence of the venous thromboembolism in each procedure (from “easy” to “hard” surgeries, with different rates of related thrombosis) and the risk factors to bear in mind in each one (related... more...

These textbooks systematically introduce the basic theories, the diagnostic methods, the therapeutic methods based on symptom differentiation, and the knowledge of principles of health preservation and rehabilitation. They explain the basic methods and theories of acupuncture and moxibustion, as well as expounding upon 151 kinds of Chinese herbs; each Chinese medicinal herb is illustrated. The textbooks also introduce 84 Chinese herbal formulas and 6... more...

This is the fourth edition of a very successful textbook on clinical trials methodology, written by three recognized experts who have long and extensive experience in all areas of clinical trials. Most chapters have been revised considerably from the third edition. A chapter on ethics has been added and topics such as noninferiority and adaptive designs now receive considerable discussion. There is much new material on adverse events, adherence, data... more...

Antipsychotic drugs have revolutionized the management of major psychiatric disorders and the outcomes of those who suffer from them. However, they often contribute to a range of adverse effects, among the most frequent and distressing of which are those resulting in disturbance of voluntary motor function. Extrapyramidal side effects--or EPS--are still poorly recognized and frequently misattributed. Despite vast research literature, there have been... more...

Great interest is now being shown in computational and mathematical neuroscience, fuelled in part by the rise in computing power, the ability to record large amounts of neurophysiological data, and advances in stochastic analysis. These techniques are leading to biophysically more realistic models. It has also become clear that both neuroscientists and mathematicians profit from collaborations in this exciting research area.Graduates and researchers in... more...

This unique book bridges the gap between evidence-based research and clinical practice. Edited by Kari Bo who has done pioneering research in this area, each chapter focuses on the evidence, from basic studies (theories or rationales for the treatment) and RCTs (appraisal of effectiveness), to the implications of these for clinical practice, and finally in recommendations on how to start, continue and progress treatment.Detailed treatment strategies -... more...

This comprehensive, practical, and user-friendly manual is designed to be a practical progression of experimental protocols that an inexperienced investigator may follow when embarking on a biochemical or biotechnology project. It will also appeal to experienced researches and graduate students as a benchtop handbook which, without sacrificing scientific concepts, maintains the spirit of experimentation.
